Choosing your wedding dress is one of the most exciting moments of wedding planning, but it can also be overwhelming. Where to start alone with so many cuts, styles, and fabrics to consider, is often half the battle. As a bridal shop that has helped countless brides say “yes” to the dress, we’ve gathered our top five expert tips to help you enjoy the journey and find a gown you truly love.
Many brides arrive to us with an idea of what they're looking for, often formed by social media, films and celebrity weddings. While inspiration is helpful, the most flattering dress isn’t always the one you expect. Style, material, and embellishments can look very different on a hanger than on you. Try on a variety of silhouettes, even ones you wouldn’t normally choose: you may be surprised by what makes you feel confident and beautiful.
Wedding dresses are not typically off-the-rack purchases; most gowns take several months to be made and delivered, followed by alterations to achieve the perfect fit. Ideally, you should start shopping 9-12 months before your wedding date. If you’re short on time, don’t panic — many bridal shops offer sample sales or rush options. But starting early certainly gives you the most choice and the least potential stress.
Before your appointment, decide on a comfortable budget and communicate it clearly with your consultant. Wedding dresses come in a wide price range, and being upfront allows your stylist to select gowns that meet both your vision and your financial comfort zone. Don’t forget to factor in alterations, accessories, and any customizations — these can affect the final cost, and you don't want to be caught blindsided.
You’ll be wearing your dress for hours: walking, sitting, hugging and dancing, all of your bridal duties, and it's supposed to be the happiest day of your life! So comfort is essential, and not just in your self image. When trying on gowns, move around. Sit down, lift your arms, and imagine wearing the dress all day. No 'perfect dress' should rub in the wrong places, make you fearful that you'll tear it on the dancefloor or feel breathless after a few glasses of wine and a lovely meal. The right gown should not only look stunning, but also allow you to enjoy every moment of your celebration without irritation or distraction.
It’s wonderful, and some will even find non-negotiable, to bring loved ones along for support, but too many opinions can become confusing, and there's such thing as too much input. Choose a small group of people who you know have your best interests at the forefront of their minds when they'll shop with you, understand your style and will be honest yet encouraging. When you find the dress, you’ll often feel it: it's euphoric, like finding a piece of yourself. Trust that feeling. Your dress should feel authentic to you, and its important to not let anybody muddy that experience for you.
Finding your wedding dress should be a joyful and memorable experience. With an open mind, good preparation, and trusted guidance, it can be one of the most important and emotional parts of your wedding planning journey. Remember: the perfect dress isn’t about rules, or what people expect of you, it’s about how you feel when you look in the mirror. When a dress makes you feel like the best version of yourself, you’ve found the one.
